Foundation Education of the Week: Bowing & Buckling Foundation Wall Repair
Because we are not all engineers, our team at Cantey Foundation Specialists believes it is important to not only help homeowners fix their foundation issues but to also educate them about what foundation issues really mean. For example, we want our customers to be able to answer the question - is a crack normal? What does it mean when my walls are bowing? How would someone fix a foundation? And is this what I really need?
To begin my Foundation Education of the Week tips, I want to address a very important issue we often see at local homes – bowing, buckling foundation walls. I will address what these terms mean for you and your home and also what you can do to fix such issues.
Most Foundations Can Be Repaired
It's important to remember that most foundations can be repaired, and in most cases we would never have to replace your foundation. This means less money and work for you and applies to both bowing and buckling walls.
Why Do Foundation Walls Bow and Buckle?
Foundation walls begin to bow and buckle when pressure outside of your walls builds up and causes them to crack and eventually buckle. Buckling can occur from any direction – into the middle of the wall, the top, or even the bottom. This results in a damaged foundation wall that needs to be repaired. Bowing and buckling is very easy to fix and you need not be worried. However, if you do not fix the problem now the wall will continue to break down from the inside, resulting in an even more damaged foundation.
How to Repair Foundation Walls
How do you fix bowing, buckling walls? We would recommend first diagnosing exactly what direction pressure is pushing your wall and then adding counterpressure from the inside. Cantey Foundation Specialists uses this strategy all the time by installing foundation wall anchors. Once we are able to even out the pressure within your walls, they will straighten and your foundation will be balanced and happy again.
